FAMILY SESSION PREP GUIDE
Get the most out of your family photo session

I love working with families to create wonderful memories. Preparation is key to ensure that you get the most out of our time together. Here are my recommendations for pre and during shoot preparation.

1. What to Wear

  • Keep it simple: Solid colors work best. Avoid loud patterns, stripes, or logos.

  • Necklines matter: Choose a neckline that flatters your face shape—V-necks, crew necks, or collars all work depending on your style.

  • Fit is key: Choose clothes that fit well. Avoid anything too baggy or overly tight.

  • Layers are great: Jackets, blazers, or cardigans can add depth.

  • Bring backups for the kids: Consider bringing a backup option for the kids in case of a spill or fall.

2. Grooming & Appearance

  • Hair: Considering getting a hair grooming a few days before (not the day of). Come with your hair styled how you normally wear it.

  • Facial hair: Trim or shave the morning of, depending on your look. Bring a razor or grooming tool if unsure.

  • Skin: Moisturize and hydrate well the day before. Avoid heavy sun exposure leading up to your session.

  • Makeup (if applicable): Aim for a natural look that enhances your features. Avoid heavy foundation or overly glossy lips.

  • Glasses: Clean your lenses and bring a glare-free pair if possible.

3. Before the Shoot

  • Sleep: Get a good night’s rest so your eyes are fresh and you look energized.

  • Hydrate: Drink plenty of water the day before and the day of.

  • Give yourself time: to get to location (if we’re meeting outdoors - this limits pre-event stress.

4. During the Session

  • Relax: This will be fun. I’ll guide you through poses, so no need to worry if you're not sure what to do.

  • Be yourself: Bring your natural energy. A relaxed, confident expression always looks best.

  • Trust the process: We’ll capture a variety of angles, groupings and expressions so you’ll have plenty to choose from.

5. Items to Bring

  • Hairbrush or comb

  • Your child’s favorite toy

  • Really key: A blanket to sit on - ideally neutral tones with no loud patterns

  • Wet wipes for the kids

  • Snacks and water
