We’ve all heard the phrase “put your best side forward” — but when it comes to headshots, that’s not just a saying…it’s the strategy.
A great headshot highlights your best features and quietly downplays the rest. Even with the most symmetrical faces (and let’s be honest, nobody’s perfectly symmetrical), we all have a “good side”… and a better side.
The trick? Figuring that out quickly and confidently during a shoot.
One of the simplest ways? Just ask. Most people know their preferred side — the one they naturally turn to in selfies or candid photos. It’s almost instinctive.
But sometimes, we have to play detective. A great little clue? Check the hair part. People often (but not always) part their hair to highlight their stronger side — better jawline, more confident angles, that kind of thing.
But I’ve learned over time — it’s rarely that simple.
That’s why, during a headshot session, I like to run a super quick test while I’m setting up lighting. A few fast shots: straight on, then a few from different side angles. It only takes a minute or two, but it tells us everything we need to know. We see the angles, the expressions, the magic — and boom — we’re ready to roll.
So when it’s your turn in front of the camera, don’t stress — we’ll find your best side. And then? We’ll make sure the world sees it, too.
