I really love nighttime photography. It wasn’t always that way though. For the longest time, it made me nervous. I was worried about camera shake, blur, or even conceptually how to best capture the moment in such low light situations. Then one day I saw some photos taken by an old colleague and inspiration of mine and boom - I had a new perspective on shootin’ in the dark. Recently we took our first family trip (yep first) to Disney with the kids. I carried my camera with me all day every day. Outside of taking the usual snaps of the kids I didn’t find too much to inspire me to shoot. Then, magically (yep pun intended) the whole place came to life as night fell. The colors, the rides, the holiday lights - transformed into a magical world of color.
Night shooting - especially around the holidays - can be incredibly fulfilling. Capturing family events, holiday parties, and or activities like tree lighting can really boost the warmth and memories of the experiences you are living in that moment. One of the fantastic things about low-light photography - if done right - is you get to achieve some really interesting dynamics in your photos. For example, motion blur can be a really powerful method for creating inviting energy in your shots resulting in incredibly artistic outcomes that you can proudly hang on a wall or use to complete your yearly Holiday card. Don’t shy away from it. Lean in - you might be happily surprised with the results you get.
